The Tricky Things breaks the stereotypical approach to blues and proves that blue sounds can rock and arouse emotions today as much as 100 years ago.
The Wrocław based group The Tricky Things was established in 2021 on the initiative of Paulina Jeżewska – an actress (related to the Capitol Musical Theater in Wrocław, Variété Theater in Krakow and Puls Television) and vocalist, lover of spicy sounds. Initially, the band played under the name “Project Women of Blues”, because the band’s repertoire consisted of songs by great blues artists, such as: Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie, Etta James and Koko Taylor. The summary of this period of an artistic activity is The Tricky Things’ debut album “Love Is”, released in the summer of 2023. Currently, the band is working on original compositions that one can already hear at the concerts.
The Tricky Things is distinguished by developing the instrumental layer of songs and breaking the stereotypical approach to blues. The band draws inspiration from various musical genres, offering not only thrilling guitar riffs, but also avant-garde harmonica solos, Afro-Cuban parts of an extensive rhythm section and the unique sound of the brass and blowing section, in which you can hear the trumpet/flugelhorn and harmonicas.
The group’s name comes from the title of the song that was one of the first they played together – “Tricky Thing” from the repertoire of the German blues singer Jessa Martens. “This song stayed with us because it continues to inspire us. It was also included on our debut album, and every time we play it at concerts, we discover something new in it,” says Paulina Jeżewska. It is also a reference to the reality surrounding us, to the loss that a person may feel in today’s troubled times, where everything is complicated – relationships, career, politics… The Tricky Things use music to create an alternative, fantasy world in which listeners can take refuge.
Musically and privately, the group’s members are associated with Wrocław, where they regularly give concerts. The Tricky Things have also performed at festivals, including: Las Woda & Blues (Grand Prix award and special award), Suwałki Blues Festival, Harmonisko – Wesołogórska Fiesta in Wetlina, Vertigo Summer Blues Festival in Wrocław, Bluesowy Wałbrzych and Fosa Blues in Świebodzin.
